Picket Line Tips for Comfort and Safety
November in Portland is cold and wet. Some of you may experience both during your shift, and while it’s dark. Your comfort and safety are very important while picketing. Here is a list of things that you may need, depending on your tolerance of outdoor weather conditions, to prevent cold stress.
- Rain hat and hat liner
- Gloves or mittens with room for handwarmers
- Handwarmers
- Water repelling raincoat or poncho
- Warm layered clothes for torso/arm base layer(s)
- Scarf or neck gaiter
- Water repelling pants; or thick pants
- Warm layered clothing for leg base layer(s)
- Winter socks
- Water repelling boots / shoes
- Flashlight (if picketing in the dark)
- Retroreflective safety vest (especially if picketing in the dark)
- Click-counter (if you have one to help your strike captain, that’s great)
Remember to:
- Try on seasonal clothing before your shift to make sure you’ll be comfortable.
- Attend to any wet clothing and footwear when you get home, ensuring it is fully dry before you wear it again on your next shift.
- Replace and restock important comfort items the night before your shift.
- Pack an extra base layer with you, in case you need it to stay warm.
- Bring any medications you may need
- Bring along a battery pack as a backup for your phone/device batteries
Spirit and Solidarity on the Picket Line
Show your union pride and determination that our members win a contract that reflects our dedication and commitment to Portland!
Here are some ideas to keep morale high and good energy flowing.
CPPW Swag
Wear buttons, stickers, union gear, and t-shirts. Remember your base layers.
Caps/beanies
Be warm; be colorful; be creative!
Umbrellas
We’re gonna get rained on, so let’s lean in and have fun with it! Bring vibrant, playful umbrellas if you’ve got ’em.
Bubbles and bling
- Costumes – wear that Halloween costume again, or go for a one-of-a-kind look. Let’s stand out, be visible, and keep our spirits high!
- Light–up options (for early or late events in the dark or semi-dark)
- Glow sticks
- Light-up accessories (necklaces, crowns, wands, light sticks – think Starlight parade)
- Reflective or light-up gear that help you stand out
Cheerful noisemakers
- Hand-held noise-makers (not battery-powered), like clapping hands, kazoos, cowbells, and shakers.
- Drums. Bring your drumming skills to help us groove and chant with a rhythm. Up level with other percussion instruments like tambourines and rattles.
- BYO chant – Write a chant to share with your picket captain. Bonus points if you write one and take a turn being a chant leader.
