How did we get to $100m?!?!
It has been an intense two weeks. From political whiplash to near-daily “updates” from city leaders about our work and budget—all while we are in active bargaining for a fair contract—it has felt difficult and stressful. This is not okay, and you are not alone.
Our union has been digging into these “updates” because city leaders have been awfully opaque, with few details amid the business jargon and empty expressions of empathy.
We want to share what we know and don’t know yet. And provide ways to channel our fear, anger, or distrust into positive action in support of city workers and the city we serve.
Our Response – City sends message on 2025 budget
Hello CPPW Leadership,

We kicked off 2025 by issuing this urgent budget message to City Council and the Mayor.
It is time for City Council and the Mayor take budget guidance from workers on the ground, doing the day-to-day work of the City!
As management talks about staff cuts, our union wants Council to consider other methods of budget management and long-term sustainable structures.
CPPW put together an initial outline of Budget Guidance to share member’s unique insights into evaluating the $8 billion budget.
Here is what we sent to City Council and the Mayor on 1/1/2025:

Is the City Trying to Scare Us?
Did Halloween come early this month?
Were you spooked by Michael Jordan’s message yesterday connecting our current bargaining and the city’s budget next year? Did you hear the ghostly whispered threat of layoffs? In this year of relentless, ongoing change and transition, don’t let these tricks scare you.
The three unions, CPPW and our partners at AFSCME and DCTU, bargaining now for fair contracts are absolutely not to blame for the city’s finances.
